Synopsis: In a first-ring suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit, Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door and invite their new neighbors Sharon and Kenny over for a barbecue. As the action unfolds we learn that Sharon and Kenny met at rehab and they don’t own a stick of furniture. Ben has lost his job and is starting a financial counseling business, he just needs to get his website up. And Mary is just trying to keep it all together. The quintessential American back-yard party quickly turns into something more dangerous—and filled with potential. Winner of the Obie Award for Best Play. Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the Susan Smith Blackburn Award.

Casting for:

Mary (30-45) – A paralegal at a small to mid-size law firm. Married to Ben. A burgeoning alcoholic. In denial. Holding onto their way of life by her fingernails.

Ben (30-45) – Recently laid off from his job as a bank loan officer. Married to Mary. Doesn’t know what he really wants, maybe he wants to be someone else. But he’s feeling the pressure to get back on track.

Kenny (25-45) – Fresh out of major substance abuse rehab. Grew up troubled and spent time in jail. Grasping at hope, but easily discouraged. He knows he could build a new life for himself and Sharon with his bare hands, as long as nothing goes wrong.

Frank (70s-80s) – Kenny’s great-uncle, he owns Kenny and Sharon’s house. The kind of man who’s been fixing his roof and rewiring the electricity on his house and taking care of his impeccable lawn for many years. Still spry. Happy.

We want this production to reflect and speak to the full diversity of our world today, and are actively seeking actors of all ethnicities and gender identities & presentations for all these roles. And we’d love to see you!
