I’m producing Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in the Co-op in September (we got the rights!). We are casting 7 roles in the show. Rehearsals begin Aug 1-Mid-Sept for a mid September opening in 707. We are casting for: Biff, Happy, Ben, Charley and The Woman. We are also looking for someone who plays the trumpet!

Director is Shannon Hile, a newcomer to PRT and a very dear friend of mine for many years. Barbara Kallir will design set and lights.

BIFF LOMAN (Male, 30s) – Biff led a charmed life as a football star with scholarship prospects, good friends, and fawning female admirers – qualities Willy felt he lacked. Because of this, Willy placed tremendous pressure on Biff to fulfill the American dream of fame and fortune in business (conflicting with Biff’s natural inclinations; he would rather work outdoors with his hands). After discovering his father’s infidelity, Biff responds by rejecting Willy’s dream for him. As an adult, Biff can’t hold down a job and habitually steals. In his final confrontation with his father, Biff is determined to know who he really is and wants Willy to acknowledge his own identity as well, embracing their common humanity.

HAPPY LOMAN (Male late 20s-30s) – After spending a life in Biff’s shadow, Happy has adopted some of Willy’s worst traits – sense of self-importance and blind servitude to societal expectations – in a quest for Willy’s attention. An assistant to an assistant buyer in a department store, Happy practices bad business ethics and sleeps with the girlfriends of superiors. Happy is a doomed character, destined to be swallowed up by the force of blind ambition that fuels an insatiable sex drive.

BEN LOMAN (Male, 60s) – Willy’s recently deceased older brother symbolizes “success for the taking” that Willy craves. Ben acquired wealth quickly after discovering diamonds in the jungles of Africa at age 21 – exploiting and profiting off land to which he had no claim. Although Ben rarely visited and regarded Willy with scorn when he did, Willy craves his brother’s acceptance. Willy’s imagined conversation with Ben drives Willy to his tragic conclusion.

CHARLEY (Male, 60s) – Willy and Linda’s next-door neighbor. Charley owns a successful business and his son, Bernard, is a wealthy and important lawyer. Charley gives Willy money weekly to pay his bills. Grounded in practicality and reasoned logic, Charley offers Willy a job. Accepting this position would mean admitting defeat as a salesman, something Willy cannot do. In a moment of vulnerability, Willy reveals to Charley, that Charley is his only friend.

THE WOMAN (40s-50s) – Willy’s mistress when Happy and Biff were in high school. Her attention and admiration boosts Willy’s ego, but she is never given a proper name. Instead, she functions as a symbol of Willy’s shortcomings and emptiness. When Biff catches Willy in his hotel room with The Woman, he loses faith in his father and his dream of passing math and going to college dies.

TRUMPET PLAYER (Any age, sex, ethnicity)
