How do you move forward when the past refuses to fade?
With her military contractor career firmly behind her, single mother Laura finally has her son front-and-center in her life. Khadija, a young Afghani woman is trying to build her own life as a refugee in “These United States”. But when a reporter appears demanding answers to a covered-up, decade-old story from Laura’s time in Afghanistan and the soldiers she was connected to there, the murky events of a single night resurface, revealing untold truths and painful consequences. From the writer of the Tony Award-nominated play Match comes a play that investigates the personal cost of war and what it means to survive.

Director’s Note: Our play is particularly relevant now in our polarized country where politicians continuously lie and deny ANY responsibility for their actions. Our layered story navigates war, complicity, and moral reckoning—we are reminded of the many forms that violence and displacement can take. While this play spans landscapes from Kabul to California, the questions it raises about power, accountability, and the historical legacy of state violence resonate deeply in our country. We are haunted by countless skeletons caused by generations of colonial violence, even as our own citizens are rounded up and jailed or deported by our country’s military. We invite you to reflect not only on the personal fences built by the characters onstage—but also on the institutional fences that continue to divide, restrict, and marginalize communities in our country and world today. May this production serve to honor the lives and voices too often silenced by systems of power—both in distant war zones and right here at home.
