In 1985, Pacific Resident Theatre Ensemble established itself first and foremost as an ensemble of theater artists. Today, that ensemble effort continues with a company of 125 artists, who typically create 12 to 17 theatrical productions across the calendar year; and who present numerous staged readings of predominantly new works. Our company’s artistic work is split between a main stage theater, where productions are produced by the Artistic Director, and a democratic Actor’s Co-op for company members to create new work, to mount “old chestnuts,” or to otherwise present their personal dream project. It’s a space where new and diverse voices receive the artistic support to learn their craft, grow and flourish.

Our Spaces

703 Venice Blvd. is our 99-seat mainstage theater. 703 hosts a variety of performances each year including plays, musicals, staged readings, celebrity readings, premieres, and more.

705 Venice Blvd. is a rehearsal and concert space that can host nearly 80 audience members. Once a thrift store, “Wanda’s” provides PRT with a welcoming, warm setting for intimate storytelling. 705 has hosted our Sunday Concert Series, Galleries, Installations, and Youth Conservatory Premieres in association with UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television’s Capstone Program.

705 1/2 and 707 Venice Blvd. are our black box performance spaces. The origins of The Pacific Resident Ensemble took root in 705 1/2 in 1986. The two spaces are proud to have performed 100+ shows between them over our 37-year existence. Today, one theater runs a Co-op show while an upcoming show is rehearsed in the other on a 2-month rotation (bearing extensions). The black-box theaters of 705 1/2 and 707 sit 39 and 35 audience members, respectively.

*The Box Office is located in 703 Venice Blvd. Please check-in here for all performances.*

Our Story

Founded in 1985, PRT is an oasis for actors, directors, playwrights and designers with extensive Broadway and regional theater careers. Our 16 mainstage seasons have produced plays of extraordinary artistic range. Our productions have set a standard of excellence in Los Angeles, having received more than 30 Los Angeles Drama Critic’s Circle Awards, the prestigious Margaret Harfod Award for continuous Achievement in Theater and two special Polly Warfield Awards for Oustanding Overall Season.

Conceived as a company with two distinct venues, we created a cooperative, experimental, black-box space in addition to our two mainstages – the PRT Co-op. Since 1985 the Co-op has produced over 100 workshop productions, many of them, new works by playwrights in residence. In 1992, we established the “Next Stage”, a program to support multicultural plays, playwrights and actors. That same season we hosted our first foreign exchange program with The Theatre on Red Square in Moscow.

The year 1996 saw the renovation and move into our second mainstage at 703 Venice. One year later we transferred our highly successful production of”The Quick-Change Room” to New York. In addition, we developed an ongoing relationship with New York’s American Place Theater and their “Literature to Life” program, created to give high school students free access to modem novels brought to life onstage.
